Car Buying and Selling (2023)

Car

Edmunds has streamlined both car buying and selling through its online marketplace and tools. The company’s website makes it easy to navigate the tools and information you need to get the best price for a car, whether you’re buying or selling.

Edmunds Car Buying Process

If you’re wondering whether to buy a new or used car, Edmunds is a great place to start. You can choose to browse new or used cars or browse by type directly from the Edmunds home page. Edmunds’ useful tools and upfront vehicle information helps buyers streamline their search.

Buying New From Edmunds

If you’re interested in buying a new car, choose new car prices or shop for new cars from the Edmunds main page. Next, you’ll be directed to a page where you can search available new vehicles by make and model, type or price. Edmunds also offers a selection of top-rated vehicles and advice on which new cars to consider.

After you choose the right vehicle for your needs, Edmunds will show you a list of local dealerships where you can purchase your vehicle and will send offer requests on your behalf. The company recommends you compare offers from multiple dealerships to obtain the best price.

Buying Used From Edmunds

Similar to purchasing new cars, buying used cars through Edmunds begins with a search. Browse certified pre-owned vehicles or enter a specific make and model to check availability by ZIP code.

Buyers can choose to purchase in-store or buy online with home delivery. However, vehicle availability varies by area and other factors.

Other Edmunds Car Buying Tools

Edmunds provides a number of valuable tools to help buyers select the best new or used vehicle for their budget and needs. When browsing for new and used cars, buyers can take advantage of resources such as:

  • Price Checker™: Compares dealer price quotes against true market value for specific cars
  • Trade-in calculator: Provides an estimated value for your used car based on a series of questions
  • True Cost To Own® calculator: Estimates additional costs of purchasing a vehicle, including vehicle value depreciation, loan taxes, fees and car insurance premiums
  • Electric vehicle rebate search: Lists new cars available near you with rebate incentives
  • Financial calculators: Estimates your monthly loan or lease payments so you can see how much car you can afford and more
  • Lease deals search: Shows lease options available from local dealerships for well-qualified buyers
  • Compare cars search: Lets you compare up to four vehicles
  • Incentive finder: Allows you to browse all new-car purchase incentives by make or vehicle type
  • Edmunds forums: Offers advice and answers related to leasing, purchasing and new or used cars
  • Car reviews and news: Reviews and up-to-date news for all cars by make and model to help you compare pricing, reliability, ownership costs and features

Edmunds App

Edmunds has a mobile app available on Android and Apple devices. While the Edmunds website allows users to buy, trade in and sell vehicles, the Edmunds app caters to users searching for cars to buy.

Users can search for cars by make, model, category and other features. Vehicle pages provide information about the car’s features, mileage, price, potential payments and more. Buyers can save cars to compare or request a quote directly from a vehicle’s listing in the app.

Edmunds Car Selling Process

As mentioned, Edmunds helps customers sell their cars to partnering dealerships and does not buy cars directly. While this expands the potential offers a seller may receive, it may also increase the overall amount paid due to extra fees.

If you want to sell your used car, Edmunds provides instant offers for used vehicles in rough to outstanding condition. To receive an offer or trade-in estimate, you’ll need to complete a few steps.

#1: Enter VIN or License Plate Number

First, you’ll be asked to enter your car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate number. This helps the offer calculator find essential details about your car, such as the make, model, year and more. You may also be prompted to select a trim style, enter your ZIP code and fill out details about the vehicle’s paint job.

#2: Enter Condition and Mileage

Next, Edmunds will ask you to determine the condition of your car. The form describes the condition categories, which range from “damaged” to “outstanding.” Edmunds states that it doesn’t provide estimates or offers for damaged vehicles.

Other aspects of your vehicle’s condition you’ll be asked about include:

  • Number and type of accidents
  • Frame damage
  • Interior smoking
  • Broken interior parts
  • Rips, tears or stains in upholstery
  • Mechanical issues or warning lights
  • Odometer condition
  • Panels with paint or repair needs
  • Major rust or hail damage
  • Tire condition
  • Number of keys
  • Aftermarket modification

You’ll also enter your car’s mileage during this step. Edmunds provides an average mileage for cars similar to yours. Cars with lower-than-average mileage may receive higher offers.

#3: Review Appraisal Report

Once you finish entering your car’s details, Edmunds will provide you with an appraisal report. This report compares your car to similar vehicles in different conditions, reviews the pricing history for your make and model and provides an overview of what your vehicle is worth.

You may also receive a conditional offer from CarMax. Compare this offer with your car’s estimated value and the price you want to receive for the vehicle. If you like the offer you receive, you’ll be provided with a selection of local dealerships through which you can complete your sale.

#4: Schedule Vehicle Drop-Off or Pickup

Accepting any offer from Edmunds requires you to select a local dealership to complete your sale. You’ll be offered the option of dropping your vehicle off or having it picked up by associates. Service availability varies by dealership.

Whether you choose pickup or drop-off, complete your paperwork online through Edmunds to save time finalizing the sale.
