The pickup truck world is being turned upside down by an onslaught of new hybrid and electric trucks entering the market. These new hybrid pickup trucks promise improved fuel mileage, more power, and much better emissions. By that same token, the newly added electric trucks bring several new zero-emissions models with excellent driving ranges and power to the mix.
There’s no denying the gas-guzzling aspects of a traditional full-size pickup truck with a V-8 engine. Many automakers are transitioning away from these larger engines by adding hybrid electric motors to V-6 or four-cylinder engines to provide as much, if not more, power than the V-8s offered.

1 Toyota Tacoma EV – This Could Be The First Electric Toyota Truck
Three Expected Trim Levels
Before the hybrid Toyota Tacoma hits the market, there’s been buzz about a potential fully electric Tacoma to fit in the midsize pickup truck market. If Toyota creates this truck and brings it to the market before 2025, it could be the first mainstream EV midsize truck available. To date, we don’t have any specs to offer performance, towing, or payload, but an EV Tacoma has been part of the near-future conversation for Toyota.
What’s Expected Of An All-Electric Tacoma?
If a new fully electric Toyota Tacoma arrives, we expect it to be offered in three trims, SR5, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro, while also including impressive tech and features. This new EV Tacoma should borrow styling and features from the full-size Tundra to give it the ruggedly handsome styling we admire. In order for this new electric truck to be useful, it will need to offer much more than 200 miles of driving range and provide excellent off-road and towing capabilities.
